Academic leaders are appointed to manage the human and materials resources of the tertiary institutions. The academic leaders are responsible for the implementation of programmes in the tertiary institutions. Academic leaders are saddled with the responsibilities of planning, organizing and coordinating the activities and programme of the institutions with the aims of actualizing the general objective of the institutions. Academic leaders in Nigerian public higher institutions are faced with many challenges preventing them from carrying out the functions. This article discussed the challenges facing Academic leaders in Nigerian public higher institutions. Secondary data and primary data were employed in the presentation. Both data were sourced from print and online publication. The paper identified inadequate fund, Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) problem, inadequate academic staff, shortage of infrastructural facilities, political influence, insecurity, brain-drain, and strike actions as challenge hindering effective performance of academic leaders in public higher institutions in Nigeria. Based on these problems identified, the following were recommended adequate funding, academic staff, and infrastructural facilities, motivation of academic staff, and implementation of agreement with ASUU and provision of adequate security in all the public higher institutions across the country
