Bu kontseptsiya har bir shaxsga nisbatan sabr-toqat va bag'rikenglikni boshqalarga aralashmasdan yashash, o'zgalarning huquq va erkinliklarini kamsitmasdan huquq va erkinliklarga ega bo'lish qobiliyati sifatida ko'zda tutadi. Tolerantlik tushunchasi zamonaviy dunyoda katta ahamiyatga ega. 1995-yil 16-noyabrda Parijda YUNESKOga aʼzo davlatlarning 185 nafardan ortiq vakillari imzosi bilan tolerantlik tamoyillari deklaratsiyasi qabul qilindi va mazkur hujjatda ushbu atamaga oʻziga xos va aniq taʼrif berildi.
