Due to shortage of public universities across the country and limited space of young Nigerians seeking admission every year, the federal and state government started public university education expansion initiative to provide more access to university education in Nigeria. This public university education expansion initiative however is faced with many challenges. This paper looked at the federal and state government public university education expansion initiative in Nigeria and the challenges. Secondary and primary data were used in the paper. The data were sorted from print and online publication. The paper identified funding problem, manpower problem, ASUU confrontation, facilities, political instability, corruption and fall in national revenue and politicization of the initiative. To ensure effective implementation of the initiative, the paper hereby recommended that both the federal and state government should provide adequate funding for the existing public universities and special funding for the public university education expansion initiative.
